The Early History Of The Bible In China

¡°The Lord exists forever; your word is firmly fixed in heaven.¡± (Psalm 119:89)

According to historical records, the earliest encounter of the Chinese people with the Bible was in the early Tang Dynasty when a Nestorian missionary, Olopen, came to China in 635 A.D. According to the records, ¡°He brought Scriptures and images from afar, and presented them at the high capital.¡±

In the early part of the nineteenth century, the first complete Chinese translation of the Bible was made jointly by Protestant missionary Robert Morrison and his Chinese assistants. Subsequently, a great deal of work relating to Bible translation and publication was accomplished thanks to the efforts of foreign missionaries and Chinese Christians. This laid a solid foundation for the Bible ministries of Chinese churches.
